The joint workshop on climate services for farmers held on 14th April 2013 at the Toki Messe Niigata Convention Center in Niigata, Japan. Mr. Carlson, president of the WFO welcomed to the participants on climate change workshop, he believes strongly that the participants could learn a lot about various experiences of farmers from various continents on climate changes. he said farming is something to provide food for people and its meaning is food security. Mr. Sok Sotha, a managing director of CFAP was invited to speak about farmers’ experiences in farming activities in response to the current climate situation and changes.
As a climate contest winner, Sotha focused mainly on challenges for small farmers, mitigation measure, adaptation measure, and the roles of stakeholders (farmers, farmers’ organisations, development agencies, researchers/scientists, the governments and mass media. He said that to build concensus amongst stakeholders is the way to make approached in response to the increasing of temperature, heavy rain, strong wind,
Hout Dara, age 33 years old, a farmer lives in Salarean village, Basac commune, Svay Chrum district, Svay Rieng Province, Dara is married with a daughter. He and his wife used to migrate from the village to find job in Phnom Penh where he worked as a construction worker while his wife worked for a garment factory. They said, everything costs them much to live in the city while they earned little money from their work there. In 2009, they decided to come back home and started to grow rice as other farmers in the village. He has 1.2ha of rice field, he grows rice in dry season for sale while in rainy season he grows rice for household consumption. Unfortunately, the rice price was too low and the production cost is high, thus it made him loss about US$250.
